Age Categories for Track & Field

It can be confusing to understand the age categories for track and field, especially since they’re based on the year of birth rather than an athlete’s current age.

The key thing to remember is that the age group is determined by the birth year, not how old an athlete is on the day of the competition. For example, if the category is U16, it means “Under 16.” This group includes all athletes who will be 15 or younger during the calendar year of competition.

Here’s a breakdown of the age categories for 2026, with a simpler explanation and common grade levels:

U12 (Under 12)
For athletes born in 2015, 2016, or 2017
This is typically for elementary school students in grades 3, 4, and 5. The focus at this level is on fun and developing fundamental skills.

U14 (Under 14)
For athletes born in 2013 or 2014
This group is generally for middle schoolers in grades 6 and 7. Athletes in this category are starting to specialize in events and refine their techniques.

U16 (Under 16)
For athletes born in 2011 or 2012
This is often for athletes in grades 8 and 9. It’s a key developmental stage where athletes begin to compete more seriously and often participate in larger, more competitive meets.

U18 (Under 18)
For athletes born in 2009 or 2010
This is the high school level for grades 10 and 11. Athletes in this group are working towards achieving personal bests and potentially qualifying for provincial or national championships.

    U20 (Under 20)
For athletes born in 2007 or 2008.
This is typically for older high school students, often in grade 12. Many athletes in this category are preparing for university-level athletics.

To figure out your child’s category, just look at their birth year and find the corresponding age group on the list.
