Competing at a Track Meet

This FAQ from the Saskatoon Track and Field Club (www.saskatoontrackclub.com) provides essential information for a smooth and successful track meet experience.

Before You Compete

Arrival: Plan to arrive at least an hour before your first event. This gives you plenty of time to find your competition number, warm up properly, and get a feel for the venue.

Competition Numbers: Each athlete must wear a competition number, provided by the meet organizers. A club representative will have the numbers. Be sure to wear your assigned number for all of your events. Numbers are worn on the back for events in which you stay in the same lane (e.g., 60m, 100m, hurdles) and on the front for events that finish on the inside lane (e.g., 800m, 1500m) and all field events. Officials will assist you and allow time to switch numbers if needed. Some smaller track meets may not supply numbers as hip numbers may be used for the track events.

Warm-Up: A proper warm-up is crucial for preventing injury and optimizing performance. You can do this on your own. If you have multiple events scheduled close together, a full warm-up for each event may not be necessary, but ensure you are warm and ready to compete. Field event athletes should also allow time
to find their mark and take practice attempts. Our club will have some coaches on hand at track meets to help the Junior Development and Elementary School program athletes.

Checking In: All athletes must check in for their events before they begin. For track events, check-in is typically at the start line about 20 minutes before the event. For field events, you can usually check in a few minutes before at the event site. Officials will let you know of any changes to this process.

During the Meet

Check the Schedule: Always double-check the schedule upon arrival. Sometimes event times are adjusted, so staying informed is key. Schedules are usually posted throughout the facility. Many of the local meets will be using Athletics Live for the Results and Schedule. PR Athletics manages many of the
local meets and you can find the schedule at their website. http://prathletics.com/
If you are unable to find the meet schedule or results, then try to search for the meet at https://live.athletic.net/meet-list

Be Aware of Timing: Be mindful that events can sometimes run earlier or later
than scheduled. Field events rarely start early, but track events might if the meet
is moving faster than expected. Adjust your warm-up accordingly.

What to Wear:
o Competition Attire: Wear your club singlet, black shorts or spandex, and running shoes or spikes. Clothing should be well-fitting to avoid restricting movement. For outdoor meets, be prepared for various weather conditions.
o Warm-Up Attire: Bring a long-sleeve shirt or jacket and sweat or track pants. Many athletes wear their warm-up gear over their competition clothes.
o Spikes: If you have spikes, ensure they are tightened. Do the majority of your warm-up in your regular running shoes and save your spikes for sprinting activities later in your warm-up.

Hydration: Always bring a water bottle to avoid dehydration. Avoid sugary drinks, which can have a negative effect on your performance.

 Competing: Focus on the techniques your coaches have taught you and try to avoid old habits. Coaches will do their best to watch your events, but remember to have fun!

Conflicting Events: If two of your events are scheduled at the same time, inform the officials at both event sites before the events begin. They will usually try to accommodate you, and you may be able to skip a throw or a jump and still compete.

After Your Event

 Results: Results are typically posted at the venue about an hour after the event concludes. Write down your time or distance to track your progress and set future goals. This is more valuable than any award.

Awards: If you earn a medal or ribbon, be sure to pick it up! You might want to write the event and your result on the back of the award so you can remember your achievement.

When in Doubt

 If you are ever unsure about where to go or what to do, ask a coach or an official. They are there to help!
