Competing at a Track Meet

This guide provides key information to help athletes have a smooth and successful meet experience. However is it important to note every meet has their own rules and looking at the technical package for each meet can give you more accurate information.

Before You Compete

  • Arrival:
Arrive at least 60 minutes before your first event to allow time for check-in, warm-up, and getting familiar with the venue.
  • Competition Numbers:
Athletes must wear their assigned number for all events. These are provided by the meet organizers and distributed by a club representative. Numbers will located near our club banner on the infield for indoor meets.
    • Back: Lane events (e.g., sprints, hurdles)
    • Front: Distance races and field events
Officials will guide you if you have questions. Some meets may use hip numbers instead.
  • Warm-Up:
A proper warm-up helps prevent injury and improve performance. Athletes should warm up independently, ensuring they are ready for each event.
    • Field event athletes should allow time for practice attempts and setting marks
    • If events are close together, adjust your warm-up as needed
Coaches will be available to support Junior Development and Elementary athletes.
  • Check-In:
Athletes must check in before each event:
    • Track events: Approx. 20 minutes before at the start line
    • Field events: At the event site prior to event start time allowing time for practice jumps/ throws etc.

During the Meet

  • Know the Schedule:
Check the schedule when you arrive and throughout the meet, as times may change. Many local meets post updates and results online:
  • Be Ready for Changes:
Events may run ahead or behind schedule. Track events may start early, so stay alert and adjust your warm-up accordingly.
  • What to Wear:
    • Competition: Club singlet, black shorts/spandex, running shoes or spikes
    • Warm-Up: Layers (jacket, long sleeves, track pants) for changing conditions
    • Spikes: Optional. Use them for event-specific warm-up and competition, not for full warm-ups
  • Hydration & Nutrition:
Bring a water bottle and stay hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks right before competing.
  • Competing:
Relax and have fun! Coaches will support when possible, but athletes should be prepared to compete independently.
  • Conflicting Events:
If events overlap, notify officials at both locations as early as possible. They will often accommodate by allowing you to rotate between events.

After Your Event

  • Results:
Results are typically posted online. Record your times or distances to track progress.
  • Awards:
If you earn a medal or ribbon, be sure to pick it up. Writing your event and result on the back can be a helpful keepsake.

When in Doubt
