What equipment or clothing should I have for my child?

What equipment or clothing should my child have?

All athletes should come prepared with the following essentials:

  • Running Shoes: A well-fitting, comfortable pair of running shoes is required for all age groups and should be worn at every practice.
    • Note: Brainsport gives a discount to all members of our club and will help you find a properly fitted shoe.
  • Athletic Clothing: T-shirt and shorts are recommended. Athletes should also bring a sweatshirt and sweatpants to keep warm as needed.
  • Water Bottle: A full water bottle is important for every practice to help athletes stay hydrated.
  • Outdoor Season Tip:
Practices take place in a variety of weather conditions. Athletes should be prepared for sun, wind, or cooler temperatures by dressing in layers and bringing what they need to stay comfortable (e.g., hat, sunscreen, extra layers).

Tip: Please label all items, as they can easily get misplaced.

What about track spikes?

Track spikes are specialized running shoes designed for speed and traction on the track. Whether your athlete needs them depends on their age and experience level:

  • Junior Development:
Spikes are not required. Athletes at this stage focus on developing fundamental skills, and running shoes are all they need.
  • Elementary School Program:
Spikes are optional, but not necessary. If your child is interested, please speak with their coach before purchasing. Proper running shoes should always be available and used regularly.
  • High School Program:
Spikes are optional but often beneficial, especially as athletes begin to specialize in events (sprints, hurdles, jumps, etc.). Different events may require different types of spikes, so it’s important to consult with a coach before buying.
